In the greatest loss ever for the British and the Australians, tens of thousands were captured, enslaved and brutalised. Including my great uncle Graydon Schneider. Notwithstanding his surname, uncle Gray was on his way to fight the Nazis. No words, however eloquent, can thank these brave souls for defending the liberties and rambunctious freedoms we take for granted. This morning I was honoured to lay a wreath at ANZAC Square along with Ian Walker and Julian Simmonds to commemorate the fall of Singapore with the 2/10th Field Regiment Association. The flag, moth-eaten and much treasured, was flying at the fall and was smuggled into POW camps before coming back to Australia.
