GST senator James McGrath, who last year suggested the GST be increased to 15% and applied to everything, has welcomed debate over the issue, but warned against increasing GST as simply a tax hike.
Senator McGrath mooted the GST proposal in his maiden speech to the Senate last July and again in a speech to the Senate last month.
“Any GST increase needs to be part of reforms that include the reduction or abolition of payroll tax and company tax,” Senator McGrath said.
“The idea is to improve the system by removing taxation on productivity and shifting it to consumption. Tax increases are the problem, not the solution.
“Tinkering around the edges is only a band aid solution.”
