The town of Winton is such an interesting place, full of great stories from Australia’s early colonial history.
The Waltzing Matilda Centre at Winton is a major tourist attraction and a key part of passing on some of our legendary tales such as that of the Jolly Swagman in Banjo Patterson’s famous poem ‘Waltzing Matilda’.
The centre was recently badly damaged by fire. So it was with great pleasure that I visited the town with Malcolm Turnbull, Minister for Regional
Development Fiona Nash and local LNP Member for Maranoa David Littleproud to confirm $8 million in funding to restore the facility.
The funding, from the Australian Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund, will help rebuild and enhance the Centre to make it a premier tourist attraction in Queensland.
Rebuilding the Centre will give back to Winton this important piece of history and local identity.
The new and improved Centre will include an interactive gallery, museum spaces, a visitor information centre, as well as a new gift shop and access for large vehicles.
The Centre will also cater for the needs of primary and secondary school groups with exhibitions not only about the tale of Waltzing Matilda but displays of early life in rural Australia, dinosaurs and local flora and fauna.
