The Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters will hold a public hearing on 5 October 2018 on the proposed amendments to the Electoral Legislation Amendment (Electoral Funding and Disclosure Reform) Bill 2017.

The Committee will hear evidence from experts in constitutional and electoral law, a broad range of charitable and environmental organisations, as well as other advocacy groups and relevant government stakeholders.

Committee Chair Senator James McGrath noted that there has been considerable support for the proposed amendments. The public hearing is a means of further canvassing opinion to ensure the Bill effectively guards against foreign interference in Australia’s democratic process.

The Bill will update Australia’s political donations framework, bringing greater transparency to political funding and maintaining the integrity of the Commonwealth’s electoral system.

Information on this inquiry, a program for the day and copies of submissions made by witnesses are available on the Committee’s website.
