Iconic Nanango Church the Centrepiece of Qld Senator’s Christmas Message
More than 1,500 Christmas cards featuring the historic Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church in Nanango will be distributed across Queensland, Australia and internationally.
Queensland LNP Senator James McGrath has made the historic church the centrepiece of his Christmas cards this year - in recognition of the importance of this magnificent church to the local community.
Senator McGrath said the Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church has been a place of worship for the community for one hundred years.
“Amid the turmoil of the Great War and having outgrown its first two churches, the local congregation raised 3,500 pounds to build a new church in memory of beloved parish priest Father James Bergin,” Senator McGrath said.
“It’s striking features are a testament to the unwavering passion and spirit of locals who worked to create an appropriate place of worship for the community.
“Built of red brick with typical Gothic arches and pinnacles, its interior rendered walls rise to a beaded timber ceiling with ornate timber trusses. Above its entrance, the statue of Our Lady stands with open arms, welcoming the faithful and watching over the community.
“One hundred years later, more than 3,000 baptisms and 710 weddings have been held at the Church.”
Each year Senator McGrath chooses an historic Queensland church to feature on his Christmas card.
“It is a simple way to celebrate our rich cultural and religious heritage and to share inspirational stories from our great state at this special time of year.”
