AIR MILES ANIKA CAUGHT BREAKING THE RULES

08 May 2026

After months of arrogance, excuses and spin, today’s findings by the Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority confirm what Australians already suspected, Communications Minister Anika Wells believed she was above the rules.

Minister Wells has been forced to repay more than $10,000 of taxpayer funds for flying her family members across the country in breach of established guidelines.

Senator James McGrath said the revelations were a serious indictment on the Minister’s judgement and Anthony Albanese’s leadership.

“Air Miles Anika repeatedly claimed everything was aboveboard but today we learn the watchdog found multiple flights and hire cars beached the rules and taxpayers footed the bill,” Senator McGrath said.

“Australians are working harder than ever just to pay their bills, while Labor ministers treat taxpayer-funded travel like a personal rewards program.

“For months, Anika Wells dismissed legitimate questions and attacked anyone who dared to raise concerns. Today proves those concerns were justified.”

Senator McGrath has repeatedly called upon Mr Albanese torefer Minister Well’s travel rorts to the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to determine if breaches of the Ministerial Code of Conduct have occurred.

“This government lectures Australians about cost-of-living pressures while one of its senior ministers was charging family travel and luxury trips to taxpayers.

“This scandal exposes a culture of entitlement within theAlbanese Government. The same Government that preaches integrity and transparency whilst actively carrying out actions to contrary.

“Ordinary Australians do not get to break the rules, misuse taxpayer funds and then simply apologise after they get caught.

“This entire saga has shown the arrogance of Minister Wells and just how out of touch she is with the financial pressures being faced every day by Australians.

“The onus is on the Prime Minister to hold his Ministers to account. Anika Wells should be stood down.”
