Arrogant PM Cuts Opposition Staff Allocation

Today, in an unprecedented decision, the Prime Minister has ripped up 30 years of convention

between the Government of the day and the Opposition.

By breaking convention, the Prime Minister has personally cut the Opposition’s staffing allocation

and make the Australian Parliament less capable of holding him and his government accountable.

“The Prime Minister today has shown himself to be personally vindictive and nasty. By breaking

convention and stripping staff from the Opposition, the Prime Minister’s arrogance is an attack on

accountability,” said Shadow Special Minister of State, Senator James McGrath.

“Given Labor’s historically significant majority, this arrogant decision to diminish Opposition

resourcing comes at his Government’s most powerful electoral moment, which is precisely the time

our country needs a strong Opposition.

“The Australian people deserve an Opposition that is resourced appropriately to be able to hold the

Government to account, especially during such a precarious and challenging time for our country.

“This substantial cut in head count significantly reduces the Opposition’s ability to conduct its work

and keep this government accountable.
